A dead man's switch is a system that performs an action automatically when you stop responding. In our case: we send you periodic check-in emails. If you click the link, everything stays sealed. If you miss a number of check-ins that you choose (say, 5 days), we assume something has happened to you and we deliver your files and messages to the people you've designated.
Every client's files are encrypted with a unique key, which is itself protected by a master key stored in a secure configuration file on the server — separate from the database. Your vault is completely separate from every other client's vault. We use industry-standard AES-256 encryption. No one can access your files without both the database and the master key file.
We send reminder emails before triggering delivery. You choose how many missed check-ins it takes before your vault opens — you can set it to 3, 5, 10, or however many you're comfortable with. The higher the number, the more buffer you have for accidental misses. You can also reset your check-in status at any time from your dashboard.
